Our 2016 Head Girl, Gemma Devitt, has been recognised for her achievement as the Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander (ATSI) student who achieved the highest WACE in 2016.

The Award is one of the top academic honours recognised by the School Curriculum and Standards Authority (SCSA) as it is only awarded to one student.

Gemma worked closely with Aboriginal Liaison Officer Jodie Hunter throughout the year to create awareness about indigenous culture in the College and community.

“I am very grateful and happy to have received the ATSI award,” she said.

“Though I am semi-removed from indigenous culture, I have the privilege of hearing anecdotes which tell of the hardships of Aboriginal people.

“This award is for them in a way, to show that change to a degree has been made and that indigenous talent and intellect is now recognised and encouraged.”

Catholic Education Western Australia Executive Director, Dr Tim McDonald, commended Gemma, saying her achievement exemplified the dedication and determination required to achieve academic excellence.
