Young Vinnies Fun Day Out

The Sacred Heart College, Sorrento “Young Vinnies Fun Day Out” for needy children was held on Saturday 19 September from 9.00am - 6.30pm. This is an annual event organised by the College Young Vinnies Group to provide a fun-filled day for 50 primary school age
children.

Fifty of our Years 11 & 12 students acted as buddies for the day, which is a huge commitment for them to give up an entire Saturday with their exams so near. Twenty-one Years 8,9 &10 students attended for the morning, cooking food and organising games and sixteen staff members attended.

The children played games in the gym, made photo frames, had a scavenger hunt and went to the Beach House in Osborne Park for fun-filled activities. The Vinnies Group has fundraised throughout the year to pay for this day and make it possible.

In the evening, the parents and other family members of the children were invited to dinner where 150 people ate a scrumptious meal of lasagne, hot chicken & salad provided by the students. The families were each presented with a hamper of food items which the students of the College have donated.

It was a wonderful day where children of many nationalities were happy to play and socialise together without hatred or prejudice and also where it was obvious that there are many kind-hearted and caring teenagers in our Community.

Catholic Schools Performing Arts Festival

The Catholic Performing Arts Festival is staged throughout the month of August. Once again Sacred Heart College has performed at the highest level.

The Festival is a wonderful opportunity for students to be involved with talented performers from other schools. All events have a judging panel and there are 3 levels of awards.

1. Perpetual Award (Shield) – presented to the top performing Catholic school.

2. Honourable Mention – presented for an outstanding performance.

3. Certificate of Merit – presented for an excellent performance.

Sacred Heart College won 3 Perpetual Awards and they were:
• Rock Band Section – Sacred Heart Upper School Rock Band
• Instrumental Ensemble Section – Sacred Heart Quartet
• Christian Dance Section – Sacred Heart Christian Dance Ensemble

Congratulations are extended to all students involved in the Performing Arts Festival. I would also like to thank the parents who support their children in so many ways in this vibrant Learning Area. Finally, a big vote of thanks to our staff. Head of Music, Mark Martino, who together with Rod Christian and the music tutors, works tirelessly and has such passion for music. Dance Coordinator, Christine Polglaze, who has managed to win this shield three times.

Robocup

Last Friday and Saturday, teams from Sacred Heart College competed in the Robocup State Titles at the Scitech Science and Technology Centre. Robocup is an international organisation with competitions in 25 countries
and all states in Australia.

Here in WA, there were around 350 primary and secondary students competing in Dance, Rescue, Premier Rescue and Soccer. The contest is always close and the pressure is high to perform on the day.

At the end of the finals, Sacred Heart had secured 7 out of the 9 possible trophies we were competing for with teams finishing 2nd and 3rd in the Rescue and 2nd and 3rd in the highly technical Premier Rescue.

Our performance in the Soccer was even better with Sacred Heart finishing 1st, 2nd and 3rd in a record field. This was a very close and tense competition with the finals finishing 3-2 in favour of our Year 12 team of Daniel Barnard and Blake Edwards as they defeated the Year 10 team of David Cann, Matt Lee Fong, Jordan Harris, Matt Mohr and Damon Bordi.

Congratulations are due to all who were involved and the results are an indication of the incredible amount of work that the students have put in during class, at the lunchtime Tekheads sessions and in their own time.

Malaysian Cultural Exchange

In April this year, thirty-five Year 10 students and four teachers visited Wesley Methodist College in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, for a week. Our gracious and generous hosts opened their homes and hearts to us through their wonderful hospitality. From the moment they greeted us at KLIA, we knew right from the start that this would be an experience that we would reflect upon and treasure for a lifetime.

The focus of this Exchange was to expand our cultural awareness and knowledge of one of our closest neighbours. The underpinning part of this Cultural Exchange programme was that we were to home stay with Malaysian families for the week. This allowed us to witness, first-hand, life in a Malaysian home and all that would entail.

As a group, each morning we would meet at school and visit many of the cultural, historic and tourist sites in the city and further afield. Some of the places of significant interest included The King’s Palace, Batu Caves, The
National Monument, a batik factory, Royal Selangor Factory, Genting Highland and Sunway Lagoon.

We were also able to experience school life as we joined our hosts for a day in classes. One of the biggest shocks was subjects such as Maths and Science conducted in Bahasa. Another example of activities that allowed us to
formulated closer ties between our two schools was a “sporting afternoon”. We competed in Netball, Basketball, Volleyball and 5-a-side Soccer. “Winning” was not the goal – inclusiveness and enjoying mixing, competing and enjoying the experience allowed us to consolidate personal and formal relationships already developed.

One of the most obvious cultural adjustments that most had to make was with the food. Some were familiar with dishes like nasi goreng and chicken curry. However, some of us were a little more adventurous experiencing such dishes as frog porridge, rabbit satay, and whole cooked fish. Other experiences were amazing – the fish spa, the mega shopping malls, and the friendliness and hospitality of everyone we met.

We would like to sincerely thank the teachers that organised and accompanied us on this trip – Mr Debono, Miss Polglaze, Mrs Tranquille and Mr Goh. It was a wonderful opportunity and an experience of a lifetime.

Harmony Day

On Monday of this week we celebrated Harmony Day.

The lunchtime concert was organised by our Year 12 Captains and they combined this event with a ‘buddy lunch’with the Year 8s.

Harmony Day is officially celebrated on 21 March each year but we celebrated earlier than this as the Year 12 students were on Retreat from Wednesday to Friday.

The message surrounding Harmony Day is “Everyone Belongs” and the focus is about dealing with cultural, racial and religious intolerance.

Harmony Day is managed by the Australian Government Department of Immigration and Citizenship and has been officially celebrated for 10 years.

Year 11 Striving Upwards Day

On Thursday 19 February, the Year Eleven students, along with our Form teachers and Dean, Mr John Sullivan, attended Striving Upwards Day. The day began bright and early at Joondalup Reception Centre where we enjoyed breakfast and an outline of what was to be expected.

Our Year Captains, Elle Rodda and Daniel Atherton, came along for breakfast and led us in a reflection. We walked to ECU Joondalup, which would be our venue
for the day. After an inspirational talk from Mr Elder, which set the mood for the day, we were introduced to Jase from the company Equipe Industries. He presented to us a program called ‘Aspire’ which aimed to enhance selfconfidence, direction and motivation and assist our year group with upper school and beyond.

We experienced different sessions which were designed to motivate us to ‘dare to reach our best’, with videos and real-life stories which aimed to improve our self-image and positive mindset. Dreams and aspirations were also a big part of our day and our futures were thought out in detail. It was an all-round informative, interactive program which kept us engaged from beginning to end.

Our Student Representative Councillors were then introduced to the year group before we had an “ECU Reach your Potential” presentation which informed us of possible pathways to university, different courses available and life on campus. A special part of the day was having Liam Della join us. We were all very happy to see Liam on Striving Upwards Day and we welcome him wholeheartedly back to our year group. All in all, the day proved to be really enjoyable and
constructive and we all learnt useful skills which will help us to strive to achieve our best.
