Dress and Appearance
- School uniform will be worn by all students:
Travelling to and from school and until a student returns home or, if engaged in after-school employment, to his/her place of employment.
During school hours.
As directed for appropriate after-school functions.
- A note from parents will be necessary to explain any deviation from the prescribed uniforms.
- Any items worn under school shirts should be neutral in colour and not visible.
- Pullovers are to be worn or kept in lockers. They are not to be carried or tied around student’s waist or shoulders.
- The winter uniform, including tie, is worn throughout Terms 2 and 3. The tie must be worn correctly and the shirt top button must be done up. Shirts must be tucked in at all times.
- Only official school scarves, purchased from the Uniform Shop, may be worn with the College uniform.
- Students must arrive at and leave the College in full school uniform, regardless of Physical Education, Dance or Drama class commitments during the day. Exceptions to this rule are:
Students travelling to school for early morning practice in official school sporting, Dance or Drama commitments may wear their sports uniform. After such early morning practice, students must change back into their school uniform unless they have Physical Education practical class before recess. All other students must come to school in their full uniform even if they have Physical Education classes in Periods 1 or 2.
Students who have Physical Education classes during the day and have changed into their sports uniform, can remain in their sports uniform for out of school hours official team commitments.
Students travelling home after official school sporting, Dance or Drama commitments can wear their school sports uniform.
If a student requires to wear the sports uniform for an entire day, the Form Teacher must be informed beforehand.
- Students changing into bathers or board shorts for PE or Outdoor Education need to ensure they place their sports uniform over these garments. Sports shoes and College sports socks need to be worn. Board shorts that are too long need to be rolled up. No student should be walking around the school in thongs, masseurs or sandals.
- Students are required to change into the sports uniform in the break before Physical Education classes and change back into their school uniform in the break after this class. Where a student has Physical Education class in Periods 1 or 2 they will be required to get changed at the beginning of the Physical Education lesson.
- The school sports uniform will be worn in Physical Education classes and by students who are members of official school teams, whether during or after school hours.
- The College pullover is not to be worn with the sports uniform.
- Students are required to wear the College hat or cap when on the oval or tennis courts in Term One and Term Four, during Physical Education class.
- Skirt and dress length for girls is on the knee.
- Blazer
Students will wear their blazer to and from school in Terms 2 and 3. Students who ride a bicycle to and from school are exempt from wearing their blazer at this time primarily for safety reasons. However, they must wear their blazer to and from the bicycle compound.
Students are not permitted to take their blazer off until the completion of Form Class. They may remove their blazer and carry them until recess when they can be stored in their lockers during the day.
Blazers are to be worn on all formal occasions during school or if appropriate, out-of-school occasions when representing the College.
- Hair Colour
Students who choose to highlight their hair must use natural hair colours.
The addition of hair colour must be so subtle that it does not necessitate visible re-growth.
- Hair Style
Hair must be at all times clean, neat and tidy and of a generally conservative style. Students must have their hair styled or restrained so that it does not fall onto their face. If uncertain concerning an alternative style check with the Dean of Students before altering your hair style.
Hair that is longer than the collar is to be completely tied back at all times.
At no time can students shave their head, or part of their head with a blade less than a number three.
Hair products (eg gel, mousse) need to be used sparingly so as to look neat and conservative (not spiky).
Students are advised that the standards set out above will be strongly enforced.
- Facial Hair
Boys are required to be clean-shaven for school. Side-burns must not be any lower than halfway down the ear. Boys who do not meet these requirements will be required to shave at school and will incur a charge for the shaving equipment.
- Jewellery
All students are encouraged to wear a wrist-watch to promote personal punctuality.
All students may wear a neck chain with one Christian religious symbol on it. These chains must be inside the uniform. Members of Antioch may wear the Antioch cross.
All students may wear a single sleeper or stud in the lower lobe of the ear. No decorative earrings are permitted.
No other jewellery is to be worn.
Any items contravening the above rules will be confiscated and kept in a secure place. Students will collect these items at the end of Term.
- Make-up - No student is permitted to wear make-up or nail polish.
Any student breaching the school rules above will be asked to rectify the situation as soon as possible.
These rules relating to dress and appearance have been created to establish a level of which everyone can be proud. At all times student dress should be of a high standard and laundered regularly. Parents are asked to ensure the correct uniform is worn at all times.
Care of Property
- All items of clothing, books and personal belongings must be clearly labelled.
- A locker with padlock is provided for each student. The locker must be kept locked at all times to ensure that valuables are kept secure. The locker must be kept tidy, and not be defaced in any way. All items must be stored in lockers, including school and sports bags, and valuables.
- Bicycles should be chained and padlocked during school hours and parked in the compound adjacent to the Maintenance Shed.
- Official school bags:
Are not permitted in classrooms – they are to be stored neatly in lockers.
Official school bags are compulsory for all students. No other bags are permissible.
- Defacing in any way, including inappropriate pictures, of school bags, uniforms, files, books, diaries etc. is prohibited.
- Audio sound and personal entertainment equipment e.g. iPods, should not be brought to school.
- Mobile Phones – The College discourages students bringing valuables to school, especially those that have the propensity to become a statement of fashion or perceived status symbol with some of our students. However, we also recognise that there may be times when students need to contact parents at the end of the day e.g. after sporting fixtures or late rehearsals. Therefore, if a student brings a mobile phone to the College, then:
During the day the phone will be turned off
The phone will be kept in the student’s locked locker
The phone is not to be used during the school day (8.40am – 3.30pm). This means that no calls or text messages are to be made or taken during school hours. Emergency calls by parents are to be directed to the Pastoral Care Centre.
The College will not be responsible for the loss, misuse or damage of the phone
Mobile phones will be confiscated if this rule is breached and a parent will be required to collect them personally from the Dean of Students concerned.
- Sunglasses – Similarly, despite discouraging students bringing valuables to school, particularly those that may be seen as a fashion statement, we do, however, promote policies that protect students from harm caused by exposure from the sun. Students are permitted to wear sunglasses that are approved by the appropriate authorities with a high SPF rating. Decorative sunglasses that offer little or no protection are not permitted.
Areas out of Bounds
- The oval before school, during morning recess and the first 10 minutes of lunch.
- Embankments, sandhills and all bush around the ovals.
- Garden areas.
- The garden slope along the school driveway and all retaining walls.
- Classrooms, teaching areas, corridors and balconies during recess and lunch unless accompanied by a teacher.
- All buildings under construction or being altered.
- The garden areas and lawns at the front of the Administration building (Boarders’ lawn) during recess and lunchtime.
- The limestone boundary wall and steps.
- All carparks.
Punctuality
Students are to arrive at school before 8.40 am and be in their Form class so that at 8.45 am form period can commence.
Students late for Form class will be required to report to their Form class. Students who arrive after 9.00am are required to report to the Pastoral Care Centre where their arrival time will be noted.
Lateness to class will be penalised.
Three or more late notes in a Term will result in after-school detention.
Students in Forms who are involved in the preparation of morning school Mass are required to be in the chapel by 8.15am.
Students who must attend Mass at an alternative time to their Form class must report to the Pastoral Care Centre following the Mass.
Students departing the College at any time during the day need to provide a note to their Form Teacher from a parent/guardian. They need to sign the Early Departure book in the Pastoral Care Centre before they leave. Students must be picked up from inside the Pastoral Care Centre.
General
- Students are not to leave classes at all during class time unless permission is obtained from their teacher. If this occurs, students must carry their diary with a signed note from their teacher. No student should be at lockers or school bags during classes or between classes, except for Physical Education and Design and Technology.
Books for periods prior to recess are obtained from lockers before form.
Books for periods prior to lunch are obtained from lockers at recess.
Books for periods prior to the end of the day are obtained from lockers at lunchtime.
- Student illness
A student reporting sick during class must bring a signed “sick bay note” from the teacher before going to Sick Bay in the Administration building.
Only in exceptional circumstances should other students accompany a student to the sick bay.
Contact with parents in the case of severe illness will be carried out by administration staff.
- The coin-operated telephone located in Sick Bay may only be used by one student at a time. Other students may not congregate around the telephone. This telephone is to be used for school-related purposes only and may not be used during class time, or at a time which may make a student late for class.
- The school is not responsible for lending money to students. In an emergency a small amount of money can be borrowed from the Dean of Students.
Absence from School
- Parents are requested to telephone the school on the absentee telephone number 9246 8288 to advise if their child is absent. A note must be forwarded to the Form Teacher with the student upon his/her return to school explaining the reason for the absence. The student’s school diary contains copies of absentee notes.
- Attendance at all special school activity days is compulsory. A medical certificate will be necessary to verify illness on such days, eg sports carnival days, Sacred Heart Day etc.
- The College discourages families from taking holidays during school time. If absolutely necessary, parents must inform the Principal in writing, well in advance, stating the reasons and dates of absence.
- Students and parents are to check the relevant Assessment Policies documented in the student school diary, to understand the consequences and their responsibilities for absence from school.
Homework
- Sacred Heart College believes there is a strong correlation between academic success and after-school study (which should include revision and consolidation).
Year 8 students should do 1-1.5 hours per night, 5 nights a week, or a total of 5-7.5 hours a week.
Year 8 students should do 1-1.5 hours per night, 5 nights a week, or a total of 5-7.5 hours a week.
Year 9 students should do 1.5-2 hours per night, 5 nights a week, or a total of 7.5–10 hours a week.
Year 10 students should do 2-2.5 hours per night, 5 nights a week, or a total of 10-12.5 hours a week.
Years 11 and 12 students should do 15 hours per week.
Homework does not only indicate set school work, but should also be an ongoing study and revision program. Students in Years 8, 9 and 10 are required to have their parents check their homework allocation regularly, acknowledge any teacher comments and reply if necessary.
Each student owns a school diary which should be signed by parents each week for students in Years 8-10. These diaries are to be kept free of graffiti and unsuitable pictures.
Internet, Email and Network Use
- At the moment the College has over 300 computers for student use. These are provided so that students can gain access to the network and Internet to support their education and research, within the educational goals and objectives of the College.
- The Acceptable Use Policy for Internet, Email and Network Use is available on the College website. Students are personally responsible for their actions when using ICT resources and any inappropriate use will result in a temporary or permanent cancellation of their privileges.
- The Deans of Students will oversee any disciplinary action which results from:
Misuse of Computing Equipment.
Violation of Email Policy
Playing Games
Misuse of Internet
Bicycles, Bus Stops, Buses and Road Safety
- Behaviour at bus stops or train stations and in buses or trains will be of a high standard. Students must be sensible and courteous at all times.
- School Captains will, from time to time, supervise these areas and they have the authority to report all offenders. .Any instruction issued by them is to be acted on by students.
- Hitch-hiking is prohibited at all times.
- Students are to walk on footpaths and not meander along any of the roadways.
- Students crossing St Hellier Dve must use the cross-walk attendant when he/she is in attendance.
- Students travelling home by Transperth bus are to wait in the area designated at the foot of the retaining wall until the relevant bus has arrived at the bus stop. Only then may students proceed up the steps to board the bus.
- Students who ride bicycles to school must wear helmets.
- Students may not ride bicycles along Hocking Parade.
- Students are prohibited from travelling to and from school on a skateboard, roller skates or in-line skates and also from using them at any time on school property.
- All bicycles are to be left in the area provided and this area is out-of-bounds during school hours. Borrowing of bicycles is not permitted. Students are not permitted to ride their bicycles on the property rather they are to dismount and walk their bicycles to the bike compound.
Students Travelling to and from School in Private Motor Vehicles
- In order to avoid congestion with school buses and pedestrians parents are asked not to park on Hocking Parade between the College entrance numbers 1 and 2 to collect students,
- Parents are to drop off and collect students in the designated car park areas within the school grounds. A map showing the designated areas is included in the College Diary.
- Parents are asked not to drop off or pick up students from the northern entrance. The only exceptions are parents of students in the Education Support Unit.
- The parking area and roadway in front of Administration is only to be used when on College business or for the collection of students from ‘Sick Bay’.
- Parents are requested to abide by the entry, speed and parking signs on school property.
- Students who have gained their license and drive to the College must park off-campus during school hours.
