Vacancy: Head of Psychological Services

About the Role:

  • Reporting to the Vice Principal, the Head of Psychological Services works in close partnership with the Assistant Deputy Principals (ADPs), providing specialist psychological expertise, professional advice and evidence‑informed guidance to support their leadership of student pastoral care and wellbeing across the College.
  • The Head of Psychological Services plays a critical role by partnering with the Assistant Deputy Principals who are ultimately accountable for student pastoral care and wellbeing, providing them with invaluable knowledge and advice, informing effective decision‑making, strategic planning and operational implementation.
  • The Head of Psychological Services contributes contemporary psychological knowledge relating to mental health and child and adolescent development to support Assistant Deputy Principals in the design, implementation and embedding of high‑quality pastoral and wellbeing practices, programs and interventions.
  • The role ensures that pastoral care at the College is underpinned by best‑practice psychological frameworks, strengthening the College’s capacity to support students’ academic, social, behavioural and emotional development.

Counselling

  • Provide high‑quality psychological assessment and therapeutic interventions for students, drawing on contemporary, evidence‑based practice.
  • Offer specialist consultation, advice and guidance to Assistant Deputy Principals, staff and parents/caregivers to support understanding of students’ psychological, emotional, social and learning needs.

Wellbeing

  • In collaboration with the Vice Principal and Deputy Principal - Community, contribute psychological expertise to help lead the design, development, implementation and review of whole‑school and targeted wellbeing initiatives.
  • Support the alignment of wellbeing programs with current research in mental health, child and adolescent development and learning.

Pastoral Care

  • Work with the Vice Principal and Assistant Deputy Principals to support the development, delivery and refinement of age‑appropriate Pastoral Care programs informed by contemporary psychological understanding.
  • Provide expert psychological input to enhance the effectiveness and sustainability of pastoral practices across year levels.

General Administration Duties

  • Attend and contribute to relevant whole‑school and wellbeing‑related meetings.
  • Support College engagement processes through attendance at parent‑teacher interviews when required.
  • Participate in transition and orientation activities, providing specialist insight into student wellbeing and adjustment.

Learning / Psychometric Assessment (Desirable)

  • Identify and assess the needs of students experiencing learning difficulties or complex learning profiles.
  • Administer assessments and prepare comprehensive written reports to inform intervention and planning.
  • Provide clear, summarised assessment findings to support funding and resourcing applications for students with additional needs.

The Head of Wellbeing and Psychological Services will demonstrate the following competencies:

  • Demonstrates the ability to lead and coordinate the College’s psychology and counselling services, supporting professional standards and collaborative practice.

  • Exhibits high‑level organisational skills, attention to detail and the ability to plan and coordinate complex administrative and professional responsibilities.

Subject Matter Expertise

  • Provides authoritative, evidence‑based psychological advice and guidance to support student wellbeing and pastoral decision‑making.

Relationship Management

  • Builds strong, collaborative relationships with students, staff, parents/caregivers and key stakeholders to support shared responsibility for student wellbeing.

Communication Skills

  • Communicates complex psychological information clearly and effectively to Assistant Deputy Principals, staff, students and parents/caregivers.

Agility

  • Demonstrates flexibility, responsiveness and sound professional judgement in addressing diverse and evolving student wellbeing needs.
