Education Support
Sacred Heart College is committed to inclusive education and supporting all students to be successful.
Students with disabilities are supported by the Mary MacKillop Centre (MMC) to fully participate and learn in the teaching and learning activities around the College alongside their peers. Students supported by the MMC have a diverse and wide range of disabilities and are taught by experienced, qualified and dedicated Education Support Teachers.
Programs
The Mary MacKillop Centre provides small group intervention classes as well as supporting students around the College. Programs offered by the MMC are evidence based and focussed on supporting students with disabilities to develop the skills, knowledge and behaviours for success at home, in the community and workplace after graduating.
Programs include:
- ASDAN
- Meaningful Maths
- Clarke Road Money Program
- Spelling Mastery
- Phonics for Students with Special Educational Needs
- Circles Program
The College also has Inclusion Mentors.
These initiatives support the College to provide a safe and supportive environment for all students by developing inclusive attitudes and building social capital for vulnerable students.
Courses
In Years 7-9, the curriculum is a balance of academic and functional skills. The students have Individualised Education Plans (IEPs) that detail the students’ needs to access and participate in high quality education. The IEPs recognise students’ existing knowledge and skills and build upon these to ensure that each student reaches their full potential and achieves academically and socially.
The courses offered within the MMC include:
- Functional Numeracy
- Functional Literacy
- Integrated Studies
- Life Skills
- Social and Communication Skills
The focus in Years 10-12 shifts to functional skills with the addition of Work Experience and increased Community Based Learning. Some students also engage in School Based Traineeships. The students have Individualised Transition Plans (ITPs) to support their transition to the community.
Support
The College believes in supporting students to develop self-determination and students are supported to develop the skill and exercise this right through involvement of students with their families and therapy team in all planning meetings.
