Overview
Lyon House is reflective of Euphrasie Barbier’s time in Lyon, France, when she emerged from hardship to form a group of religious missionary women in 1861 - The Sisters of Our Lady of the Missions (RNDM Sisters). From Lyon, Euphrasie inspired her Sisters with a deep devotion to Jesus’ mission to bring care and compassion to God’s people around the world.
Lyon House's values and characteristics are:
- Courage: Inspired by Euphrasie Barbier's determination to pursue missionary work across continents, and by Lyon's history of resilience (from the Roman Era to the Resistance in WWII).
- Perseverance: Like the lion that symbolises our name, we endure with unwavering strength. We rise from setbacks, push beyond limits and lead with a steadfast spirit!
Crest Meaning
The crest contains the following:
- The Crown - Taken from our Sacred Heart College crest in representation of Euphrasie being the head of the RNDM Sisters
- The Periwinkle - symbolises heavenly serenity and grace and blue is traditionally linked to Mary. The white stands for purity and innocence.
- The Lion - reminds the world that Lyon, like its heraldic beast, stands strong at the meeting of two rivers, fierce in its history and radiant in its identity.
- The Mystical Rose - speaks of Mary's love, purity and mystery. In the context of Lyon, where Marian devotion, religious heritage and symbols of light and renewal are important, the rose becomes a fitting emblem of faith, beauty and hope.
- The RNDM Cross - the rays of light represents the Fête des Lumières (Festival of Lights), a key component of Lyon’s rich history.
House Totems
Lyon House's Totems are Bobtail Lizard and Native Hibiscus.
